Cape Air in-cabin pet policy — and the carriers that fit
Cape Air allows small pets in the cabin in a carrier up to 17 × 12.5 × 8.5 in, stowed under the seat in front of you. Already own a carrier? Enter its measurements below to check it against this limit. The in-cabin fee is $49 for transportation of a pet carrier or kennel containing up to two small pets from the same household (waived for up to two bona fide service animals from the same household). 1 of the 15 carriers we track clears that published limit.
The only one that clears it — the Sherpa Original Deluxe (Small) — matches Cape's published limit exactly, with no measurable slack, so measure your own carrier before you fly. Cape's 8.5" height ceiling sits mid-pack among the 77 airlines we track (shared with JetBlue, WestJet): Aegean, Air Europa, Air France and Air Transat allow more, while EL AL Israel allows only 7".

This table ranks by Cape Air’s size limit — not by your pet. The weight under each carrier is what that size is rated to hold. A bag can clear the airline and still be the wrong size for the animal, which is the most common reason one goes back — measure your pet first →

How to confirm your actual under-seat space
Cape Air's number is its published maximum, not a guarantee for your exact seat. Before you buy or fly:
- Check which aircraft operates your flight (in your booking or on a seat-map site).
- Avoid bulkhead and exit rows — bulkheads have no under-seat storage and most airlines ban pets there — and check this airline's seat rules above.
- Call Cape Air to confirm under-seat dimensions for that aircraft, or
- Choose a collapsible / flexible-height carrier that adapts to a tighter space.

Common questions
What size pet carrier does Cape Air allow in the cabin?
Cape Air's recommended maximum in-cabin carrier is 17 × 12.5 × 8.5 in. It must fit fully under the seat in front of you. Source: the Cape Air pet policy.
How much does Cape Air charge for an in-cabin pet?
$49 for transportation of a pet carrier or kennel containing up to two small pets from the same household (waived for up to two bona fide service animals from the same household). Always confirm the current fee on the official Cape Air pet page before you fly.
Which pet carriers fit Cape Air?
1 of the 15 carriers we track clears Cape Air's published 17 × 12.5 × 8.5 in. The roomiest is the Sherpa Original Deluxe (Small), and even that one matches the limit exactly rather than clearing it, so measure before you fly. The heaviest pet any carrier that clears Cape Air is rated for is 8 lb. Full shortlist: /fits/cape-air/.
Is Cape Air's 17 × 12.5 × 8.5 in limit guaranteed on every aircraft?
No. Cape Air publishes TWO different kennel maxima and states space is not guaranteed. The general maximum kennel size is 28" x 20.5" x 20.5", but flights to/from New York (JFK) are capped at 17" (L) x 12.5" (W) x 8.5" (H) with animal and kennel combined not exceeding 20 pounds. The smaller JFK figure is recorded here so the fit test cannot over-state. Carrier type also varies by aircraft: the Tecnam Traveller requires HARD-sided kennels only (secured behind an opaque divider), while the Cessna 402 accepts soft or hard-sided kennels secured behind the last row; on Hyannis-Nantucket-Martha's Vineyard, kennels are not required for dogs under 80 lbs. Cape Air states: "Due to the size of our aircraft, weight and balance limitations, and space constraints inside the passenger cabin, the advance notification is not a guarantee that a Pet or Service Animal will be able to be accommodated on board any particular flight," and "Cape Air reserves the right to refuse carriage of Pets or Service Animals at any time on the basis of safety and aircraft limitations." Some Caribbean destinations prohibit rabbits and birds (dogs and cats only); no adult poultry. Pets are not transferred between connecting flights and must be checked/retrieved planeside for each Cape Air flight. Treat the published figure as a fleet-wide maximum, not a promise for your seat, and prefer a collapsible or flexible-height carrier.
How many pets can I bring in the cabin on Cape Air?
Only one passenger (or household) may travel with up to two pets or up to two service animals per aircraft. Species accepted: domesticated cats, dogs, rabbits, household birds. Weight limit: 20 lb animal and kennel combined on flights to/from New York JFK; no general pet weight limit published for other routes. Advance notification is recommended — call Cape Air reservations at 800-227-3247; notification is not a guarantee of space
