Airline pet fee & carrier-size index 2026
58 airlines, ranked by what it costs to fly a pet in the cabin, how much under-seat space the carrier gets, and how heavy the pet may be. Every number links to the airline's own policy page and the date we read it. Where an airline publishes nothing, the cell says so; it is never filled with a guess or a zero.
Five findings
- Cheapest published fee: $35 — Hawaiian Airlines, Southern Airways Express and Southwest Airlines, on the lowest tier each lists (check which routes it covers). The most expensive published US-dollar fee is $399 (Etihad Airways), 11.4× the lowest.
- Smallest space: EL AL Israel Airlines at 13 × 8 × 7 in (728 cubic inches). The largest published limit, Contour Airlines at 24 × 16 × 10 in, holds 5.3× the volume.
- 13 of 58 airlines publish an outright ban on pets in the cabin, including Air New Zealand, ANA (All Nippon Airways) and British Airways. Each ban is quoted from the airline's own policy page.
- The most common weight cap is 8 kg (17.6 lb), published by 17 of the 28 airlines that state a weight limit — and it usually includes the carrier. 17 airlines that accept cabin pets publish no weight number at all.
- 28 of the 45 airlines that accept cabin pets list their fee in US dollars. 7 list it first in another currency (shown as written, never converted) and 10 publish no amount on their pet page.

How this is built
Each row comes from the airline's own pet policy page, linked in the Source column with the date it was read. We record the smallest published carrier size where an airline lists several, so no fit is overstated. Weight limits are converted from kg at 2.2046 lb/kg and may include the carrier; the airline's exact wording is on its page here. Found a figure that changed? Tell us and we re-read the source. Of the 28 airlines here that publish a US-dollar fee, the lowest published figure is $35 (Hawaiian Airlines, Southern Airways Express and Southwest Airlines). Check which routes that fee covers on the airline's own page before booking; the lowest fee is not always valid on every route.
Which airline gives a pet carrier the most space under the seat?
Contour Airlines publishes the largest in-cabin carrier limit in this index, 24 × 16 × 10 in. The smallest is EL AL Israel Airlines at 13 × 8 × 7 in. These are the airlines' published maximums; the real space under a given seat can be smaller.
